Bill and I were making dinner together in the kitchen last night…

Okay, before I get to the point of this entry, I have to talk about making dinner with Bill. Cooking with Bill is one of my most favorite things to do, ever. I love spending time with him in the kitchen, listening to music and working together to concoct some sort of gastronomical goodness. I mentioned this to him last night, to which he responded, “Well of course, Gypsy.” Since Gypsy, our Beagle, is a food whore, this wasn’t the most flattering of comments, but whatever. So I like my food. I’ve never protested that fact. Nyah.

ANYway. We shredded up some leftover beef pot roast (have you made it yet?) and diced up some boiled red potatoes (skin on), and tossed them in the cast-iron skillet to brown and heat and congeal. Bill added eleventy-seven secret ingredients to the mix to liven it up (salsa, hot sauce, spices, other things he wouldn’t reveal). We pan-fried a couple of flour tortillas (soft taco size) and heated up the oven. Then Bill topped the now-crunchy tortillas with refried beans, the beef/potato mixture, and a mountain of shredded cheddar cheese, and stuck them in the oven to get all melty. They turned out to be these totally tricked out tostadas that were probably a thousand calories each and they were GLORIOUSLY DELICIOUS. When was the last time you ate something GLORIOUSLY DELICIOUS, I ask you? My husband is an instinctual cook, the fact which simultaneously delights me and causes me pains of envy.

So. We’re in the kitchen. We’re listening to the 80’s music channel. A particular song came on that made me exclaim, “If I had to choose one song to represent the entire 80’s decade, this one would be it.” To which Bill responded, “That would be a good topic for a blog entry.” To which I replied, “Hey, it would!” So I wrote it down on a piece of notebook paper, stuck it in my bag, found it this morning when I off-loaded my stuff onto my desk, and voila. Here we are.

So, here’s the question, gang: Which song would you choose to represent the entire 80’s decade? Which song just screams “Quintessential 80’s” to you?

Here’s what I’d pick (of course):

I have no idea, something from MTV… Like Girls just want to have fun, or Money for Nothing… oh! Hungry Eyes! yeah, I think that must be it.

  2. Taoist Biker says:

That’s a good one. BUT, I’ve had this argument before, and my argument is for “Don’t You Want Me” by the Human League.

    1) British
    2) Mixed gender
    3) Androgynous men
    4) Heavy synths
    5) Kinda sung, kinda sorta rapped (in a very white British way)
    6) Skinny ties and big hair!

Crap. I just rewatched the vid and my memory was faulty – I remembered he wore that black suit, but I forgot he didn’t have a tie. D’oh! And the hair, while big-ish, has nothing on people like, say, Limahl or the Thompson Twins.

  3. Jeanette says:

Its a toss up between I’ll Stop The World And Melt With You (sorry, not sure of the name) or Hungry Like A Wolf!

  4. iamheatherjo says:

My answer to this question never changes…”Melt With You” by Modern English. 🙂

  5. crisitunity says:

“You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)” or “Everybody Wants to Rule the World”. Not for any scientific reasons, they just are. To be realistic we should have mentioned something by Madonna or MJ or someone else who was a giant star during the 80’s, but it’s the white-boy New Wave bands that we’re all thinking of.

  6. iamheatherjo says:

I don’t know, I think choosing a “One Hit Wonder” rather than some hit off of any of the monster albums to define the 80s is almost…poetic. Hee…

  7. Bill says:

Money For Nothing – Dire Straits, Kyrie – Mr. Mister, West End Girls – Pet Shop Boys, Baby, I Love Your Way – Will To Power, Shout – Tears For Fears and anything from Hall and Oates or REO always makes me thinks of the 80’s but I’m going with St. Elmo’s Fire (Man In Motion) – John Parr. Not my favorite but it’s hard to pick one song from one of the best ever decades of music.
Oh wait maybe the Miami Vice Theme 🙂

  8. jinbeth says:

Speaking of one hit wonders, and the one that screams 80’s to me is “Tainted Love” by Soft Cell.

  9. Shelli says:

Anything from a hair band or Run DMC, or a combination of the 2! 😀
