This post is in no way meant to label me as a literary snob.

1) What author do you own the most books by?
It’s kind of a three-way tie between Anne McCaffrey, Mercedes Lackey, and Laurell K. Hamilton. I say “kind of” because I’m not going to actually GO to my book closet and COUNT.

2) What book do you own the most copies of?
I have two copies each of every book in the “Hitchhiker’s Gude to the Galaxy” series. Chalk that up to “Stuff Laura Kept in the Divorce”.

3) Did it bother you that both those questions ended with prepositions?
Why, are prepositions something I should be afraid of?

4) What fictional character are you secretly in love with?
Jason. Still. DESPITE LKH’s last book, which sucked donkey kong.

Also, if anybody steals this meme and answers this question with either “Edward” or “Jacob”, I shall shun them. COMPLETELY AND FOREVER. I’M LOOKING AT YOU, JEN.

5) What book have you read the most times in your life (excluding picture books read to children; i.e., Goodnight Moon does not count)?
A bunch, but The Lady by Anne McCaffrey stands out in particular.

6) What was your favorite book when you were ten years old?
The Dark is Rising series.

7) What is the worst book you’ve read in the past year?
Well, according to my list, looks like it was something called “Jane’s Warlord” by Angela Knight. I remember NOTHING about it, so it must’ve been pretty bad. If it rates lower than a “5” on my scale, I don’t finish it, anyway. I mean, what would be the point of finishing a TRULY bad book?

8 ) What is the best book you’ve read in the past year?
Well, I’ve been digging Charlaine Harris’ Sookie books, lately.

9) If you could force everyone you tagged to read one book, what would it be?
The Time Traveler’s Wife by Audrey Niffenegger. Seriously.

10) Who deserves to win the next Nobel Prize for Literature?
NOBODY on Oprah’s book list.

11) What book would you most like to see made into a movie?
Actually, I remember actually thinking, after finishing Flirting with Danger and the subsequent books, that it would make for a great movie. IF adapted right. Which, as everyone knows, is key.

12) What book would you least like to see made into a movie?
Well, the one I was least happy about was The Seeker – The Dark is Rising, which was adapted from the book I mentioned in question #6. EPIC FAIL and totally disrespectful of the book, the series, and the author.

13) Describe your weirdest dream involving a writer, book, or literary character.
Heh. I always have HAWT dreams after reading an Anita Blake novel.

14) What is the most lowbrow book you’ve read as an adult?
Uh, yeah. I have a prolific romance novel collection.

15) What is the most difficult book you’ve ever read?
Difficult to get through, or difficult from an emotional level? To get through, I’d say ol’ Billy Boy’s memoir. On an emotional level, I’d say The Lovely Bones.

16) What is the most obscure Shakespeare play you’ve seen?
Nothing obscure, really. “Much Ado About Nothing” and “Hamlet” and “Midsummer Night’s Dream” and “Taming of the Shrew” and “Romeo and Juliet”.

17) Do you prefer the French or the Russians?
As a people, or as a dressing?

18) Roth or Updike?
I don’t care, but this guy does.

19) David Sedaris or Dave Eggers?
Sedaris comes across as pompous, to me. Just based on his Wikipedia page, I suspect I’d like Eggers better.

20) Shakespeare, Milton, or Chaucer?
“Three dead poets walk into a bar…”

21) Austen or Eliot?
Austen. I mean, I’m a girl, aren’t I?

22) What is the biggest or most embarrassing gap in your reading?
Yeah. I don’t hang in circles where the gaps in my reading would be an issue.

23) What is your favorite novel?
Isn’t this the same, in principle, as number five?

24) Play?
It’s a tie between The Clouds and Lysistrata. I like Aristophanes.

25) Poem?
Psalms is nice. I also like Blake’s Auguries of Innocence.

26) Essay?
Meditations by Marcus Aurelius. Hey, I used to own the Great Books of the Western World. Chalk that one up to “Stuff Laura Lost in the Divorce”.

27) Short story?
You know? None come to mind. I’m much more of an Epic Novel Length kind of reader.

28) Work of nonfiction?
I’m not typically a nonfiction kind of girl, but I did enjoy A Walk in the Woods.

29) Who is your favorite writer?
Probably tied to number one.

30) Who is the most overrated writer alive today?
STEPHANIE MEYER HOLY FUCK.

31) What is your desert island book?
“How to Survive on a Desert Island”

32) And… what are you reading right now?
“His Majesty’s Dragon” by Naomi Novik, and “Black Sun Rising” by CS Friedman. Shockingly, I’m still in the middle of these and have been for a couple of months. Those who know me realize that it’s a VERY unusual thing, to have only read EIGHT books thus far this year. There must be something wrong.

Ha, I came SO CLOSE to posting this yesterday, based on the fact I have nothing else to say right now…in fact there’s a chance I still might.
Until then, I’m so glad to hear you say that about Stephanie Meyer – the books suck, flat out. The writing is horrible, and I’m by no means a book snob – just come over and check out my two full shelves of Stephen King if you don’t believe me.
But I will say this – give Sedaris a chance. The story “The Rooster” in his collection Dress My Family in Courderoy and Denim made me laugh so hard, I pulled a muscle. Not all of his stuff is great, but the majority of it will make you laugh, cry and perhaps even sneeze, all during the course of one book.

    • Laura says:

I read the books, and I even enjoyed the books, from a complete mind-candy point of view. I did NOT obsess over the books, nor did I read them eleventy-billion times in a row, and not only did I MOCK the movie “Twilight”, I MST3K the HELL outta that fucker.

I have “Me Talk Pretty One Day”, read half of it, and tossed it as a bad use of my time. I will re-open my mind for an altered opinion, however, for your sake. 😀

      • iamheatherjo says:

You…tossed…a book? Like, threw it away?!?!? You didn’t! Send it to me. I will read it. His damn books are always checked out at the library when I look for them. It’s beginning to piss me off.

      • Laura says:

Of COURSE I didn’t throw it away. I just stopped reading it. It’s probably stuck in the closet somewhere, if I find it I’ll bring it with me in July.

  2. Taoist Biker says:

I’ve been meaning to ask you how you like BSR – guess I’ll wait a while before I ask. 😀

    • Laura says:

I don’t know why or how, but I totally lost my Need To Read. I’ll get through it, though! I’m only a few chapters in, and I’m liking it, but I’m having a hard time wrapping my mind around/distinguishing between the characters. I think once things start actually HAPPENING, it’ll go faster. A lot of books that I end up loving are like that – slow to start, then TOTALLY awesome from about a third of the way in, on.

  3. iamheatherjo says:

I’m working on this one as well. I had another book meme around here somewhere that I started and never finished. You know, because I was probably reading. Hee!

    • Laura says:

I read yours. Now I’m going to look up some Christopher Moore books at my library. Calvin will never forgive you if you’ve gotten me hooked on another author. “Books are stoopid.”

      • iamheatherjo says:

I sent Kim a Christopher Moore starter kit. ‘The Stupidest Angel’ and ‘A Dirty Job’. I would have sent ‘Lamb: The Gospel According To Biff, Christ’s Childhood Pal’ but I didn’t want to beat her over the head with Mr. Moore. Those are my very favorites, although I do love every one. 😀

  4. jadesymb says:

Oh Good Lord…. I would never pick Ed or Jake. I’d kill both of them.

  5. LL Cool Joe says:

Oh cool you did it! How long did that take you then? I must read it all sometime! Joking!

I thought our lists were very similar. 😉

  6. Kim says:

    DAMN!
I think the story The Rooster is in Me Talk Pretty! If you can find it, it’s worth digging it out just to read that one, I promise!

  7. sherry says:

I can not participate in this meme due to the disclaimer in #4. ;(

Oh wait! Snape! Is Snape okay? 😀

  8. Stella says:

Bwahahaha. Dark is Rising – OMG… my fave book series as a kid. Loved, loved, loved. I think I’ve told you that before.

And, dude, never really got into the Twilight hype. I guess I’m more old school and prefer Anne Rice. Although, I loved her Mayfair Witches series more than the vampire series.

I’m actually in love with Sue Grafton, Kinsey Millhone is one of my all-time favorite characters.

  9. […] desert island book? Flowers in the Attic or Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, although I think Laura’s choice of How to Survive on a Desert Island is eminently […]
