Well, HELL.

Calvin and I had an argument last night, and as such went to bed in a sour mood toward one another. We very rarely argue, and when we do resolution is usually just a heartfelt and productive conversation away. So I figured we’d sleep on it, go about our business the next day, and by the time we got home after work we would have both gained perspective.

That probably would have happened, if CRAP hadn’t gotten in the way. Crap that was completely and entirely my fault.

I’m in charge of the finances. I pay the bills, I figure out savings plans, I figure out debt payoff plans. My typical method is to plan to amass a certain amount in savings, and once that amount is gathered, transfer the money from savings to checking and throw the whole chunk at a credit card. This is what I planned to do last Friday. I scheduled a hefty payment to be withdrawn from our checking account and applied toward one of the credit cards.

Except that I neglected to do one very important thing. I forgot, somehow, to also schedule the funds to be pulled from savings and deposited into checking in order to support this hefty payment.

Which resulted in an overdrawn account. Which also resulted in an “insufficient funds” message presented to Calvin when he stuck his card in the ATM this morning to get cash, I assume, for breakfast.

Which caused Calvin to call me, legitimately questioning why the HELL the account was overdrawn, when we certainly make enough money for him to be able to stick his card in the ATM and pull out a twenty whenever the need should arise.

He is absolutely right, and I’m a complete idiot. Given his history with his ex and the way she routinely mishandled their finances, this is a subject that Calvin is very specifically sensitive to. On the several other occasions (some legitimately my fault, others the bank’s fault or unforeseen circumstances) in which the account was overdrawn, Calvin has lit right the fuck up.

Since he was already aggravated at me, for this to happen this morning of all mornings is just icing on the fucking cake. Of course, as soon as he called and told me what happened, I realized right away what I had done. I jumped on the computer, accessed our accounts on-line, made the necessary transfers, and everything was straightened out. Since he hasn’t called me a second time, I’m assuming he tried the ATM again and things went through just fine.

FUCK. I feel even worse now than I did when I woke up this morning. Fighting with Calvin always makes reality seem shifted two inches to the left. Now I’ve made it even worse and I’m an idiot. I’ve refreshed and added to the aggravation and I’m madder at myself than Calvin ever could be.

We’ll be fine, we’ll talk and get things sorted out, and this will blow over. Still, though. Dammit. Fuck. Shit.

Oh, Laura. I’m sure that once Calvin cools down, he’ll realize that you do a really good job with the finances and that this was an honest mistake.

  2. Heather says:

Want me to call him and tell him to get over it already? I will, yanno! Ruff roo both. 😉

  3. Laura says:

Amanda and Heather – ~grin~ Thanks, but in this case Calvin has a right to be annoyed. I just called him and apologized again. He’s not mad, just frustrated, as is understandable. It wasn’t my intention to paint him as a big meany!!!

Take it from someone who has been married a really long time — shit happens. You’re only human, and humans make mistakes.

I haven’t overdrawn the bank account in a long time, but I am guilty of forgetting to do “important” things — and then the Farmer gets his panties in a bunch until I remind him that I am trying to remember EVERYTHING for four different people’s schedules AND the livestock business AND the farm business. Sometimes I fail….only human, ya know?

Men get wound up about money….specifically if they can’t have it when they want it 😉 Honestly, they just like knowing if they want $50 that it’s there for them. They like knowing they’ve taken take of providing the money for the family. At least that’s how the Farmer is.

We learned long ago not to fight about money. Like the Farmer says, “Why fight over something you don’t have?” 🙂

Anyhow, this too shall pass. Don’t let him (or you) make a bigger deal out of it than it is…..it was just a simple mistake. And next time move the money before you schedule the payment 😉

I’ve had that “WTF are we getting an ‘insufficient funds’ letter for?!?” mood a time or two myself. My take on it is that by doing this public mea culpa you’re 3/4 of the way to it all being over.

The other 1/4 I can’t write about…NWS and all that.

  6. dyskinesia says:

Yeah, that would be my husband up there with his “Sex is the answer to any question” methodology. 😉 I’m surprised he didn’t point me toward his comment so that I could read it and feel the need to make up for something, heh.

Of course, thank goodness I read this when I did or the credit card bill would have been late. Hell, I had a whole 6 minutes to spare! 😀

  7. Laura says:

    Farmwife – Duly noted! ~grin~

TB and Dyskinesia – Okay, it took Dyskinesia’s comment to figure out what NWS stood for… all I could think of was, “National Weather Service? Huh?” (I consider it quite the coup that both of you commented on two separate entries on the same day, btw… :D)

  8. Taoist Biker says:

There are all KINDS of jokes to be made about “Not Work Safe” and “National Weather Service” but I don’t know you well enough to be THAT filthy. *laugh*

  9. Laura says:

TB – Way to show restraint! I am duly impressed.
